How to Make a Hojicha Latte at Home

What is Hojicha?

Hojicha (焙じ茶) is a Japanese green tea that has been slow-roasted over charcoal, giving it a warm, nutty, caramel-like flavour that sets it apart from all other teas. Unlike most green teas, Hojicha is low in caffeine, making it a beautiful choice for an afternoon wind-down or a cosy evening ritual.

At RUIIZ Ritual Pantry, our Organic Japanese Hojicha Tea 70g is sourced from small family farms in Japan and stone-ground to a fine powder, ready to whisk into your perfect latte.

Hojicha Benefits

  • Low caffeine: Contains up to 80% less caffeine than regular green tea, making it ideal for evenings or those sensitive to caffeine.
  • Rich in antioxidants: Hojicha is packed with catechins and polyphenols that support cellular health.
  • Calming effect: Contains L-theanine, an amino acid known to promote a sense of calm and focused relaxation.
  • Supports digestion: Traditionally consumed after meals in Japan to ease digestion.
  • Warming and grounding: The roasting process creates a naturally warming, earthy flavour making it perfect for seasonal self-care rituals.

What You'll Need

  • 1 tsp Organic Japanese Hojicha Tea 70g
  • 60ml hot water (80°C — just off the boil)
  • 200ml milk of choice (oat milk froths beautifully and complements the toasty notes)
  • 1 tsp maple syrup or honey (optional, to taste)
  • A milk frother or small whisk

How to Make a Hojicha Latte

  1. Sift your hojicha into your mug or a small bowl to avoid clumping.
  2. Add hot water (80°C) and whisk briskly in a zigzag motion until fully dissolved and slightly frothy. Don't use boiling water — it can turn the flavour bitter.
  3. Heat your milk gently on the stovetop or in a frother until steaming. Froth until silky and smooth.
  4. Pour the frothed milk over your hojicha concentrate, holding back the foam with a spoon.
  5. Spoon the foam on top and dust with a pinch of extra hojicha powder.
  6. Sweeten with maple syrup or honey if desired. Sip slowly.

Iced Hojicha Latte Variation

For a chilled version, whisk your hojicha with 30ml cold water and pour over a glass packed with ice. Add cold milk and stir gently. A drizzle of maple syrup makes it feel like a café-worthy treat without leaving your kitchen.

Make it a Ritual

The Japanese concept of ma (間) — the art of pause — is built into every cup of hojicha. Its toasty warmth invites you to slow down, breathe, and be present. Light a candle, put your phone down, and let this be five minutes that are entirely yours.
